Great thoughts! I see Trumpism as a response to black people asking police to stop shooting them, women asking men to stop raping them and Americans asking for healthcare - the conservative answer is a resounding NO.

Our USA systems of power were built on patriarchy, discrimination and segregation. Anyone who doesn't see that are just not looking and choosing to view the past with rose colored glasses.

The philosophical musings about “true” conservatism is simply mental masturbation with no intrinsic value. “Conservatism” is just the existing privileged old guard justifying its continued grip on the economics that propels the political control that permits and perpetuates aggrandizement. What do “conservatives” want? The want to keep and protect what they have already acquired (be it wealth, power, privilege) and see this acquisition as somehow their “god given right”. Conservatism had been masked under Reagan and Bush as the philosophy that allowed those with grit, capability, fortitude (and luck) to achieve wealth through their individual actions… Clearly at best an exaggeration and a myth. Conservatives “laissez faire” “free market” economics has never been a reality — it is a fiction foisted on us by those who control the system. One needs lay bear the foibles of capitalism with its inherent tendency toward oligopoly to understand how this systematic exploitation underlies what is posed as “conservatism”.

The problem is that between roughly the Carter and Obama presidencies, Democrats were viewed as harmless weirdos with little hope of holding actual power for long, and in that environment you got Reagan and the Bushes. Then Democrats lost the popular vote precisely once between 1992 and 2020 while increasingly embracing the political left however incrementally, paving way for a combative environment where Trump thrives.
